VP, Product Development

The VP, Product Development will report to the Chief Executive Officer to help meet the challenges associated with the development of a comprehensive product line, including an ambitious program of organic product line growth combined with the licensing and purchase of products from outside sources. 

The VP, Product Development is responsible for delivering our products to market on time, on budget, and to spec. He or she will be an essential collaborator in the entire product life cycle from inception of ideas to the delivery of the product.

Duties and Responsibilities

Create and maintain the product development plan and budget in concert with the business plan development by the management team and the board. This will involve establishing technical and personal credibility with a strong, diverse scientific and engineering team while directing their activities.

  • Lead the technical team to implement the product development plan, including regular progress reviews, resource allocations, and recommending initiation of new projects or cessation of existing projects.
  • Effectively utilize the Company's diverse research, design, and product development to deliver commercially-viable products to the marketplace in a timely and cost effective manner.
  • Fully participate in the ongoing development of the Company's business plan, including market selection, product definition, strategic alliances and contract research and/or production.
  • Define optimized processes for requirements definitions, project and product lifecycle management, design efforts, coding and/or hardware prototyping, and verification and validation.
  • Facilitate communication across functional teams including project status, justifications for variances and technical information (architecture, design and implementation objectives).
  • Plan and direct all aspects of an organization's product development policies, objectives and initiatives including process definition and implementation.
  • Research new products, products enhancements, and product redesign that align the product development function with the goals of the organization. 
  • Demonstrate expertise in a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Leads and directs the work of others, including the selection and management of product development teams in accordance with established product development guidelines and methodologies.
  • Evaluate and resolve technical feasibility, design optimization, and production issues.
  • Ensure labeling and marketing/promotional literature matches product specifications and capabilities.
  • Research and monitor existing client base and industry developments and identify potential new product opportunities.
  • Work with other departments to establish design, technology, development, test and evaluation, and related strategies.
  • Manage project budgets and prepare project cost analysis reports for top management.
  • Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Should be a sound working knowledge of the following processes related to product planning and the next phase which is the actual product development process.

Other Requirements

This position requires a highly motivated, self-confident, creative, and successful Product Development executive, who has an impressive track record of bringing products to market on time and to budget, with the requisite quality.

The candidate will have a background in engineering or physics and ideally will have earned one or more advanced degrees.

He or she today is likely a Director or VP Engineering, R&D or Product Development in a similar technology company.

This individual must be a team leader with an energy level and drive that motivates those around him/her to persevere through tough situations and ultimately to meet agreed-upon goals.
